Uganda is mourning the sudden loss of Rajiv Ruparelia, a prominent businessman, rally driver, and philanthropist, who tragically died in a car accident early this morning, Saturday, May 3, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 1:54 AM at the Busabala flyover along the Kampala Southern Bypass. According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the white Nissan GTR (UAT 638L) crashed, overturned, and caught fire, resulting in Rajiv’s immediate death at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle after colliding with temporary pavements installed at the roundabout section of the flyover .
Rajiv was the Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, founded by his father, Sudhir Ruparelia. Under his leadership, the group expanded into various sectors, including real estate, hospitality, education, and finance. Notable assets under the group include Kabira Country Club, Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Hotel, Kampala Parents School, and Meera Investments .
In addition to his business acumen, Rajiv was a passionate motorsport enthusiast under RR Rally Team. He made his rally debut in 2019, quickly gaining recognition for his exceptional pace and determination. His involvement in the sport was not just as a competitor but also as a patron, supporting the Central Motorsport Club.
Beyond his professional and sporting endeavors, Rajiv was deeply committed to philanthropy. He was actively involved in various charitable initiatives, including supporting children with disabilities through organizations like the Home of Hope in Jinja. His contributions extended to education, where he facilitated scholarships for students and pupils under Ruparelia Foundation.
Rajiv’s untimely passing leaves a significant void in Uganda’s business, sports, and different communities. His legacy of leadership, generosity, and passion for development will continue to inspire many. As investigations into the accident continue, the nation reflects on the profound impact Rajiv had on various sectors and expresses condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his work.
