John Baptist Achal: A Father, Champion, and Motorsport Icon with His Eyes Set on Africa

Born on September 1, 1980, John Baptist Achal is a name that resonates with passion, perseverance, and legacy in Uganda’s motorsport world. A three-time champion in the category 2WD Co-Driver, Achal is more than just a competitor—he’s a father, a mentor, and an inspiration.

His journey into motorsport began in 2008, introduced by his friend and OB George Ssemakula Katende. Starting as a marshal, Achal quickly transitioned into the co-driver’s seat alongside the legendary Ismail Ortega. Together, the dynamic duo won championships in 2009, 2010, and 2011, steering their Toyota Levin into the annals of local motorsport history. After a brief sabbatical, they made a comeback in 2015 in a Toyota RunX, although the season fell short of expectations.

In 2022, the world of motorsport took a beautiful turn when Achal returned—this time not for himself, but to support her daughter, Joy Norah Akao, an emerging motorcross talent. Riding bike number #896. Joy became the heartbeat of Achal’s racing spirit. Her determination reignited his passion, and the following year, in 2023, Achal officially joined the motocross circuit in the MX Vets category with his bike nicknamed Boeing 747—a machine he proudly says, “flies like an airplane.”

His debut season was cut short due to injury, but not without impact. Even with limited participation, Achal brought fresh energy and intense competition to the MX Vets category. Now, in 2025, he returns stronger, fully focused on clinching the championship and earning a spot on the continental stage.

Currently sitting second overall after three rounds Masaka, Garuga and Mityana, Achal heads into the fourth round at Omito Race Track in Lira—his home turf—with bold confidence. “Lira is my home,” he declares. “My competitors better come prepared, because you will not challenge me at my home.” With that mindset, he has a real shot at leading the championship after this weekend.

Achal’s journey is supported by Softa Solutions, a one-stop center for ICT and engineering services, whose belief in his dream matches his own determination.

His story is one of legacy in motion—a father paving the track for his daughter, while carving his own path to African glory. As he often says, “Once a champion, always a champion—and cockpit is cockpit.”
