In the roaring world of rally racing, where dreams, mechanics, and passion collide, one name is steadily rising in Uganda’s 2WD category – Edward Kirumira, famously known in rally fraternities as May Weather. He is the proud founder and lead driver of the Eddy May Weather Rally Team, a team born out of sheer determination, garage grease, and an undying love for motorsport.
Kirumira’s journey began humbly in 2002, not behind the wheel, but under the hood. Working as a mechanic, he serviced motorsport cars, giving him a front-row seat to the world of rally. His interest grew stronger as he fixed machines for the sport’s greats. Watching local legends like Champion Duncan Mubiru ‘Kikankane’ and Champion Nasser Mutebi blaze trails on rally stages ignited a fire in him. He didn’t just want to fix cars—he wanted to race them.
In 2014, Kirumira took a bold step from fan to driver, entering the motorsport scene with a Toyota Corona 170. At the time, it was purely for fun, competing in autocross and Clubman Rally Championship (CRC) events. But as he puts it, “Once you join rally, it’s hard to stop.”
The following year, he stepped up to more competitive events and in 2016, entered the National Rally Championship (NRC) behind the wheel of a Subaru GC8 – a powerful upgrade that marked his serious entry into the sport.
In 2018, Kirumira switched back to his preferred brand, acquiring a Toyota Curren, which he raced with heart and consistency until 2023. True to his love for Toyota, he upgraded again—this time to a Toyota Corona 190, which he currently drives. The car has not only reignited his competitive edge but has placed him at the top of the 2WD category, bringing him closer to his dream of becoming a 2WD Champion.
Kirumira expresses deep confidence in the Corona 190, saying, “This is the car that will make my dream come true. I trust it. I trust my team.”
Behind every great driver is a network of support. For Kirumira, sponsorship has been a cornerstone of his journey. He is thankful to past supporters including:
- UHMG (2014–2015)
- Smile Train, known for its impactful health programs
- Big Zone, despite their closure due to COVID-19
- Regina Textiles
- Kyadondo SS
But it is Stabex International, his current main sponsor, that has played the biggest role in his recent success. The relationship began in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown when Kirumira sold Stabex gas. It evolved into a full partnership built on mutual trust and shared goals. Stabex now fuels his performance, literally and figuratively, supporting him through injury and rally challenges.
“They believed in me even during my toughest times,” Kirumira says. “They are not just sponsors—they are family.”
Stabex’s mission now includes deeper integration into motorsport, including fuel card benefits for rally drivers, Officials and Motorsport community-based activations across Uganda.
Kirumira’s journey is not just about winning. He recently conducted a CSR project in Kayunga, distributing reflectors to boda boda riders. “Safety is important,” he emphasized. “These riders are our brothers, and many are loyal Stabex customers. We must protect them.” He also raised a concern during his visit—Kayunga lacks a Stabex fuel station, a gap he hopes the company will address soon.
With the Bugerere STABEX EMC Rally around the corner in Jinja and Kayunga, Kirumira is laser focused. Though Jinja has been a tough terrain for him in the past, this time he’s ready to rewrite that narrative.
“Expect fire,” he promises. “This rally is for legacy, for my fans, and for Stabex. I won’t let them down.”
The much-anticipated Stabex Power Stage promises high performance and thrilling action – aligning perfectly with the sponsor’s slogan, “Powering the Performance.”
In a heartfelt appeal, Kirumira urged the FMU (Federation of Motorsport Uganda) to ensure that drivers are honored for their achievements.
“We work so hard for those titles—time, money, effort, and sacrifices. We don’t ask for much, but please, award us our trophies at the end of the season. It’s not just award. It’s a legacy we leave for our children and grandchildren,” he said.
He also extended appreciation to former FMU President Dusman Okee, who introduced him to the motorsport world.
To aspiring rally drivers, his advice is clear: “Don’t wait for luck to knock at your door. Go out there and chase your dream. Motorsport is fun—but it’s also work. Earn your place.
From humble mechanic to national rally contender, Edward Kirumira ‘May Weather’ is racing with purpose, passion, and pride. With the support of his team and Stabex International, the finish line of his dreams is well within reach.
