A team of 16 athletics has left for Denmark ahead of the World Athletics Road Running championships due 19-20 September 2026. At a flag off ceremony held on Wednesday September 15, 2026, Uganda Athletics president Benjamin Otuchet highlighted the vital medals that Athletics has brought into the country.
” We are a major sports discipline in this country. Athletics has brought joy to this country and as a body, we are sure that our team will perfom well, Otuchet said.
The team includes Uganda’s multiple Olympic and World gold medalist Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei and Charity Cherop who claimed 5000m gold and 3000m bronze at the 2026 U20 championships.
The Copenhagen championship has attracted a total of 496 elite athletes from 85 countries who include 226 women and 270 men competing for individual and world’s team titles in 1 mile, 5km and half marathon(21km) races. A total of 65,000 participants is expected to take part in the various categories.
The high team entry showcases the strength, and appeal Uganda attaches to the global road running championships going by the stellar performances.
