KCB-Nkumba Volleyball Club made a winning return to competitive action with a commanding 3–1 victory over Kampala University in the finals of the Nkumba University Open Championship, played on 23–24 August 2025 at the Nkumba University grounds.
The triumph marks the team’s first outing since taking a mid-season break in June, and it comes at a crucial time as the squad builds momentum ahead of the prestigious NSSF KAVC International Tournament scheduled for September.
The final began with Kampala University taking the opening set 25–23, capitalising on KCB-Nkumba’s rusty start. However, once the team settled into a rhythm, there was no looking back. The response was emphatic, as KCB-Nkumba powered through the next three sets 25–12, 25–17, and 25–12, displaying dominance in attack, precision in service, and composure under pressure.
The turnaround highlighted both the depth and resilience within the squad. The players not only regrouped after the early setback but also imposed their authority on the game, leaving Kampala University unable to match their pace and consistency.
Jennifer Alungat and KatreenaOdermaat were the most outstanding players. Together, they embodied the fighting spirit that carried the team through. The performance of the duo was complemented by the team’s collective effort and discipline.
Speaking after the victory, Head Coach LakonyTonny Peter expressed pride in the team’s resilience but stressed that this was just the beginning. “This win means a lot because it is our first competition after the break,” he said. “The players are not yet at full fitness, but they showed heart and character. It gives us a strong platform to build from as we prepare for the international stage.”
Adding to the celebrations, Sheila Awori, Ag. Head of Marketing and Communications at KCB Bank Uganda, said: “We are proud of the KCB-Nkumba team for this outstanding performance. The NSSF KAVC International Tournament in September will be the next major test. After sitting out last year, KCB-Nkumba’s return is highly anticipated, and the Nkumba Open title now provides both confidence and valuable match practice as they seek to challenge for regional honours.
The Nkumba University Open Championship, a fixture that attracts strong competition annually, once again proved to be a thrilling stage for showcasing local volleyball talent. For KCB-Nkumba, the victory is a statement of intent. It signals their readiness to reclaim dominance and reaffirm their reputation as a disciplined, and competitive team on and off the court.
