The motorsport community is mourning the tragic and untimely death of Rajiv Ruparelia, who died on the spot following a fatal accident. His passing has sent shockwaves across the rally fraternity, leaving fellow drivers, navigators, journalists, and officials in grief.

Rajiv was more than just a driver—he was a passionate and fearless competitor, admired by many in Uganda’s rally circles.

Umar Daud, Senior Driver (W.I.D Rally Team) who competed alongside him in numerous events, described him as “a down-to-earth person, fierce yet fair competitor who brought energy and excitement to every rally he entered.” He added that Rajiv’s presence always lit up the paddock and motivated others to push harder.

Asuman Muhammad, navigator (Sodo Rally Team) and a friend recalled Rajiv’s dedication and technical understanding of the sport. “He wasn’t just fast behind the wheel—he understood what made a car tick. Off-track, he was a brother to many of us, well behaved and respected everyone around him despite their family wealth,” Asuman shared.

Immaculate Najjuma, ( HapaSport Media) got a chance to interact with Rajiv during several events, reflected on his charisma and humility. “Rajiv was always willing to talk—even after a tough stage. He was approachable, loved speed and the sport at large. His passion was contagious,” she said.

Jackson Sserwanga, Assistant General Secretary (FMU) who emphasized Rajiv’s contribution to growing motorsport in the country. “Rajiv was jolly, aggressive, one of the faces of modern rallying in Uganda. His commitment and enthusiasm were an inspiration to motorsport fraternity at large.”

Ibrahim Nsereko, (Time Marshal and spokesperson referees in Motorsport Uganda), praised Rajiv’s discipline during races. “He respected time controls like few others. He understood that rallying wasn’t just about speed, money but also about discipline and structure. He never argued at checkpoints, always calm, always professional.”

Frank Sserugo Kaheesi (Head of FMU Media Commission)

The motorsport fraternity in Uganda has been struck by a tragic loss following the sudden passing of Rajiv Ruparelia in a high-speed sports car accident. His death comes as a shock to many who had hoped to see his return to active competition. We expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that Rajiv had recently taken a sabbatical from motorsport following the Kaliro incident. Despite stepping back from the driver’s seat, he continued to support various activities under the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU), Central Motorsport Club (CMC) and was a significant figure behind the scenes.

We had strong hopes that Rajiv would return to motorsport soon,” Sserugo said. “He remained engaged, supportive, and enthusiastic about the sport. It’s devastating to lose someone with such passion and promise.”

Among rally fans, Rajiv was not just admired for his speed on the track but for his vibrant personality.

Herbert Mukiibi, famously known as (Herbie Addict), a passionate rally enthusiast, described Rajiv as “a social person, always joking and in high spirits whenever you met him at a rally.”

“Despite his wealth, he was incredibly down-to-earth,” Herbie added. “His vibe and energy were unmatched. We will miss him—not just as a driver, but as a brother in the rally family.”

As engines rev and the excitement builds for the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mbarara, the motorsport fraternity across Uganda is carrying heavy hearts, mourning the untimely death of rally driver  Rajiv Ruparelia. In the paddocks, pit lanes, and media, the name Rajiv is being spoken with a mixture of sadness and admiration. Though he won’t line up at the start line this year, his spirit and energy remain deeply embedded in the rally scene.

Motorsport journalists, many of us interviewed Rajiv during his racing career, remember a man who respected the media and always made time to engage. “He was one of the few who treated us like part of the sport, not outsiders. His charm and openness made every story about him easy to tell.

As the rally caravan heads to Mbarara, the mood will be competitive—but also commemorative. Many crews are expected to place Rajiv’s name or initials on their cars as a mark of respect.

The collective message to the Ruparelia family from the motorsport fraternity is one of love, solidarity, and remembrance. In this time of loss, we stand with the family. Rajiv was a brother on and off the track, his laughter, generosity, and passion will never be forgotten. Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally (POAUR), we shall carry his memory in every turn, every cheer, and every victory. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire motorsport in Uganda. The motorsport community will remember him not only for his speed, but for his charisma, generosity, and love for the sport.
