Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) president Eddie Bazira has made an appeal to National Council of Sports (NCS) to return the mandate of regulating professional boxing back to them.
This follows a letter written by NCS general secretary Benard Ogwel(August 11) stating and showing that Uganda Boxing Federation application failed to meet minimum standards. In the letter, it was discovered that UBF only had presence in 46 districts contrary to earlier reports that the body was present in 112 districts.
“As UPBC, we are more than ready to regulate and sanction professional bouts. We have written to National Council of Sports regarding this matter. UBF should only stick to amateur boxing.Pro Boxing is a reserve of UPBC”, Bazira confirmed.
Addressing a stakeholders meeting on Saturday at New Obligato, Bazira castigated UBF for wasting the Commission’s time in cancelling many bouts and frustrating promoters.
“UBF frustrated us and yet they do not have the mandate to run professional boxing.They therefore do not qualify to be a federation”, Bazira said.
The meeting also approved various committees that are geared towards strengthening UPBC’S mandate in and outside Uganda. Some of the committees announced included, advisory,legal, health,marketing, diaspora international liason among others.
The National Council of Sports Act 2023 stipulates clearly that a federation must be present in 75 percent of the districts (110 districts) while for an association,presence must be atleast 50 percent of the districts(73 districts)
