The National Council of Sports General Secretary has on Friday August 21 flagged off the national motorcross team to Namibia, ahead of the FIM Africa Motorcross of African Nations 2026.
In a flag off ceremony held at Lugogo, Dr. Patrick Ogwel urged the team to perform well as it is representing millions of Ugandans.” I am privileged to flag off this great team of young stars. Government has fully supported this trip. Go out and perform well,” Ogwel said.
The team captain, Gift Ssebuguzi expressed readiness for the continental event. “We have had enough training ahead of this trip. We are ready as team Uganda and shall excel,”Ssebuguzi asserted.
Hajji Hamidu Gombe, the acting president, Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda, applauded Government for supporting grass root development, a thing that goes a long way in creating the much-needed niche for sports development in the country.
“Indeed, National Council of Sports has fully funded the 34-member team of riders categorized in; 50CC, 65, MX Lites, MX125, WMX, MX2, MX1, MX Veterans and MX Masters respectively. They have made this trip happen and our team has to bring good results, “Gombe noted.
The event is set to take place at Gallina Motorcoss Park in Windhoek, Namibia on 29th and 30th August 2026. It will feature Africa’s top riders competing for championship honors.
Riders from Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, Madagascar, Senegal and hosts Namibia will represent their countries.
Uganda last won the continental show piece in 2012 when it hosted it at the famous Busiika Sports Arena. The team finished third in 2025 and South Africa emerged as champions.
