For more than two decades, Ponsiano Lwakataka has been one of the defining figures in Ugandan rallying. His fearless driving, unwavering determination, and ability to thrill thousands of fans have earned him a place among the country’s most respected motorsport icons.

From spectacular victories on challenging rally stages to unforgettable performances that have inspired a new generation of drivers, Lwakataka’s name has become synonymous with resilience and passion for the sport.

Today, however, the celebrated rally driver is fighting a very different battle—one that cannot be won through courage or speed alone.

A Champion Defying the Odds

Despite competing with a Subaru Impreza N12B, a car that is no longer considered among the most competitive machines in modern rallying, Lwakataka has continued to deliver remarkable results.

His record speaks for itself.

The veteran driver has won four of his last six rallies, an achievement that highlights not only his exceptional driving ability but also his determination to remain competitive against rivals equipped with newer and more advanced rally cars.

His performances have reminded fans why he remains one of Uganda’s finest rally drivers. Yet, motorsport is a discipline where technology and engineering often determine the difference between victory and defeat.

The Challenge Beyond Talent

While Lwakataka’s experience behind the wheel remains unquestionable, the limitations of his current rally car have become increasingly difficult to overcome.

Mechanical reliability, performance, and the rapid evolution of rally technology have all combined to place him at a disadvantage against competitors using newer machinery.

These challenges extend beyond race day.

Limited competitiveness makes it harder to secure long-term sponsorships, attract new commercial partners, and maintain the financial support required to compete consistently at the highest level.

Even the greatest drivers need the right equipment to succeed.

A New Opportunity

Hope has emerged through an opportunity to purchase the rally car formerly owned by the late Rajiv Ruparelia.

The car represents far more than a new machine. It offers Lwakataka the opportunity to return to the front of the field and compete on equal terms with the country’s leading rally drivers.

A deposit has already been paid, demonstrating the team’s commitment to securing the vehicle. However, additional financial support is urgently required to complete the purchase.

The timing is critical.

With the Federation scheduling a sprint event on 20 September 2026, acquiring the car before then would allow Lwakataka sufficient time to prepare for the remainder of the season and pursue further success.

Rallying the Nation Behind a Champion

To raise the remaining funds, a Fundraising Dinner has been organized, bringing together motorsport enthusiasts, corporate leaders, business executives, political leaders, sponsors, and supporters of Ugandan sport.

The event aims to unite everyone who believes that one of Uganda’s greatest rally ambassadors deserves another opportunity to compete at the highest level.

The fundraising dinner will be hosted by Jamil Mukyakazze, Mayanja Godfrey, President of Southern Motor Club, together with Ponsiano Lwakataka.

More Than Supporting One Driver

The campaign extends beyond helping one rally driver acquire a new car.

It is about strengthening Ugandan motorsport as a whole.

Every rally event creates economic opportunities for mechanics, engineers, fuel suppliers, transport companies, accommodation providers, food vendors, media professionals, photographers, security personnel, and countless small businesses operating along the rally route.

Supporting Lwakataka is therefore an investment in an entire sporting ecosystem that continues to inspire young athletes while contributing to local economies across the country.

A Moment for Uganda to Stand Together

Throughout his career, Ponsiano Lwakataka has carried the hopes of thousands of rally fans across Uganda. He has thrilled spectators with unforgettable performances and demonstrated that perseverance can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Now, the tables have turned.

The driver who has spent years giving everything for the sport is asking the nation to stand with him during one of the most important moments of his career.

Champions are remembered not only for the victories they achieve, but also for the communities that refuse to let them walk—or race—the difficult road alone.

On 18 July 2026, Uganda has an opportunity to show that its sporting heroes are never forgotten.

The question remains:

Will the motorsport fraternity, Corporate Uganda, political leaders, and passionate fans answer the call?

For Ponsiano Lwakataka, this is not simply about acquiring another rally car.

It is about giving a champion the opportunity to compete once again, inspire future generations, and continue writing one of the greatest stories in Ugandan rally history.

Sometimes, the most important victory is not won on the rally stage—it is earned through the support of a nation that believes in it
