Days preceding the Friday boxing brief were full of threats and intimidation from the Uganda Boxing Federation corner. Reason; boxing stakeholders should not attend a meeting called by UPBC.
Uganda Professional Boxing Commission stuck to its guns and unleashed jabs, hooks and boxed their way to yet a successful boxing engagement with professional boxing stakeholders.
Promoters, managers, agents, match makers, referees and judges, coaches, trainers and boxers filled Madhivani Hall at UMA show grounds to the raptors, waiting for that special message from the General.
And indeed, the message was delivered, much to the delightment of the boxing stakeholders. Who delivered the message?
PLU Head of Mobilisation and Igara East Member of Parliament Michael Mawanda came with a special message of support from PLU National Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the Chief of Defence Forces.
“I am here to represent PLU Chaiman Gen Muhoozi, who was invited by UPBC-He directed me to tell you to continue managing the sport of boxing professionally so that more Ugandans can secure jobs through the sport.
UPBC President Eddie Bazira expressed happiness with Mawanda’s attendance noting that this shows that they are on the right track concerning the plight of professional boxers.
“This is a significant step towards improving the livelihoods and careers of professional boxers in the country,” Bazira noted.
The event comes at a time when Sports State Minister Hon.Peter Ogwang directed UBF and UPBC to harmonize before a federation is formed, but UBF president Moses Muhangi has turned a deaf ear in meeting UPBC.
