In a world, full of challenges, Philanthropy sets in. A team of seven has decided to engage on a mission of riding for a cause. The Mountains For Medicine Capstone ride, a collaborative mission between Davenport and Sports Outreach Ministries serves the right purpose.
American cyclists led by team leader John Davenport have endured a thrilling cycling experience stretching from Nairobi to Busia border town and back. The charity journey is aimed at raising funds worth $300,000 USD towards the Nia Davenport Medical Centre in Kiwawu, off Mityana road.
Sports Outreach Ministries (SOM) founder and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Katende is quick to note that the health facility needs a helping hand in the form of; equipment, medical care and welfare for the medical personnel. He revealed this as he addressed the media on Tuesday 7th July 2026 in Kenya.
“Our major aim is to raise the funds needed for the facility in Kiwawu. We have a total of nine doctors in our two medical facilities (Mityana and Gulu). We call upon people to donate to this worthy cause. Every one kilometer is worth $1 USD,” Katende noted.
To a beaming team leader, John Davenport from North Carolina, the Kenyan experience has been worthy and the goal will be realized.
“The roads have been rough with extremely high temperatures but thank God, we made it. We don’t quit when we start and we shall definitely achieve at the end,” Davenport said.
Samantha Bendt, the only female rider on the team from South Carolina, is upbeat that this expedition has lived up to its billing.
“This experience serves a bigger purpose and makes the ride a little bit easier. To be the only female, is an eye opener for more to join the campaign, “Samantha emphasized.
The five-day campaign under the tag line, ’One Ride, One Mission’ was supposed to be held in two countries (Kenya and Uganda), but due to the Ebola outbreak, shifted to Kenya.
